Music is God’s idea. He created it, and God Himself sings (Zeph 3:17). It’s also clear from God’s Word that one of the reasons He gave us music was as a vehicle to worship Him (Colossians 3:16).

So at Redeemer, the goal of our music ministry is this: to magnify Jesus Christ, His magnificent worth and His saving work, such that it sits deep in our head and hearts resulting in appropriately passionate worship of God in our gatherings.

The first way we aim to do that is to choose songs that are not only true, but also musically beautiful and enjoyable to sing. We recognise that Christians have been writing songs for centuries and as such there is a great treasury of hymns to draw from, as well as new songs that express ancient truths in fresh ways. We know that we could worship God without instruments (and do so during Ramadan), but the Psalms also make it clear that instruments are there to praise God with (Psalm 150). So we use those instruments the Lord has chosen to bless our church with, and which serve the goal of congregational worship of God.

In addition to songs and instruments, we seek to magnify Jesus Christ in our very lives. Serving in the music team is a position of leadership in the church, so we expect that our members who are musicians will lead by example and demonstrate humility and diligence as they serve the church in music.

Because God rejoices over us with singing (Zeph 3:17), we want to do likewise - to rejoice in Jesus Christ, the One who has redeemed us from slavery to sin, and given us eternal life. We have no greater reason to rejoice!
