2020 has been characterized by distance, yet Christmas gives us a message of nearness. This year we have been reminded of the fragility of our world as we know it, yet Christmas declares that we still have reasons for joy.
In the song “Joy to the World,” we sing that God became a man to make his blessings flow as “far as the curse is found.” This is because, as a man, Jesus lived the perfect life we could never live and yet suffered the curse of death that our sins deserve. Because Jesus came, died, and rose, we can be assured that the curse of sin and death that covers the whole earth will not have the final word. Jesus frees all who trust in him from the guilt of sin and, one day he will come again. When Jesus comes again, his blessings will again cover the earth. Sin, death, disease, and distance will be replaced by righteousness, life, healing, and presence, “far as the curse is found.”
We hope that, whatever Christmas looks like for you this year, you will be able to rest and rejoice in our God who came near: Jesus, who is God with us.
